PoE

Power over Ethernet - Where power is supplied through the same cat UTP cable as that used for Ethernet.

Use

PoE is generally used instead of a dedicated power cable, to supply remote Access points.
Due to their size and low power requirements, AP's lend themselves to being mounted close to their antennas. A benefit of being close to the Antenna is the reduced RF loss and cleaner signal. PoE can minimize the cabling requirements as well as cope with the low power requirements.

Cable

Cat 5 ethernet cable (twisted pair) consists of 4 pairs (8 wires). Only 2 pair (or 4 wires) are needed for the ethernet link. The remaining wires may be used to carry the power supply to the device.
